Villarreal‘s chances of progressing to the next round of the Europa League were dealt a blow when they were beaten 3-1 in Lyon last Thursday. Bagging the away goal was crucial for Javier Calleja’s men but he’ll be frustrated by his side conceding a late goal from Memphis Depay which may have sealed their fate. A comeback isn’t out of the question though but it’s essential that the home side keep it tight at the back as conceding just one goal means that they’ll have to find the net at least three times to be in with a chance of progressing.
Villarreal are winless in their last three La Liga games, losing two of them to lower-table sides. These losses and a recent 1-1 draw at home to Espanyol mean they’ve dropped down to 6th place in the league and are not looking likely to catch up with the likes of Real Madrid or Valencia for a place in next seasons Champions League.
Andrés Fernández, Rúben Semedo, Bruno Soriano, Nicola Sansone and Ramiro Guerra are all unavailable for selection on Thursday due to injury.
Lyon‘s late goal against Villarreal last Thursday will take the pressure of this second leg but Bruno Génésio knows his team still have a lot to do to ensure their place in the last 16.
