Champions League preview – Bayern Munich vs Juventus prediction.

Mario Gotze was substituted with an elbow injury on Saturday and is doubtful of making the Bayern Munich squad for the Champions League showdown with Juventus on Wednesday. Medhi Benatia will likely partner Joshua Kimmich is central defence as Jeremy Boateng and Holger Badstuber are sidelined with injury. Xabi Alonso and Frank Ribery could find themselves demoted to bench duty after featuring in the 5-0 win over Werder Bremen at the weekend while Javi Martinez is closing on recovery and could also get a place on the bench if passed fit.

Giorgio Chiellini’s recovery from a calf injury has not gone as well as hoped and Juventus look likely to be without the world class defender for the trip to Germany. Stefano Sturaro could come into central midfield for the injured Claudio Marchisio while Alvaro Morato is on standby in case Mario Mandzukic is unable to shake off a knock he picked up against Sassuolo at the weekend. Paul Pogba made a brief appearance on Friday and should return to the lineup against Bayern.

Possible Line-ups

Bayern Munich 4-1-4-1 formation: Neuer; Lahm, Kimmich, Benatia, Alaba; Vidal; Robben, Muller, Thiago, Costa; Lewandowski

Juventus 4-4-2 formation: Buffon; Lichtsteiner, Barzagli, Bonucci, Evra; Cuadrado, Khedira, Sturaro, Pogba; Dybala, Mandzukic

Prediction

Bayern Munich have won their last nine home games in the Champions League, scoring an average of four goals per game. Pep Guardiola’s side looked to have this tie wrapped up in the first leg when leading 2-0 but allowed Juventus to pull two goals back in the last 30 minutes to keep the tie alive. Bayern were defeated for the first time at home in the Bundesliga earlier this month but went some way to making amends when beating Werder Bremen 5-0 in the Allianz Arena at the weekend.

Juventus are unbeaten in all competitions since losing 1-0 at Sevilla in the group stage of the Champions League. Max Allegri’s side is unbeaten on its last two visits to Germany, drawing 1-1 against Gladbach in November and defeating Dortmund 3-0 last season although Juventus lost 2-0 at Bayern Munich when the sides met in the knockout stage of the 2012/2013 competition.

Bayern let Juventus off the hook in the first leg and are unlikely to make the same mistake a second time.
