La Liga preview – Sporting Gijon vs Villarreal prediction.

Central midfielder Nacho Cases serves a one-match ban after receiving his marching orders for two yellow cards against Getafe last weekend. Rachid Ait-Atmane looks favourite to replace him among a number of midfield options for Gijon. Striker Antonio Sanabria has been nursing a problem with his hip but is expected to make the line up along with goalkeeper Ivan Cuellar who has had treatment for an ankle knock. Centre-back Bernardo Espinosa and midfielder Daniel Ndi remain on the sidelines for the final match of the season.

Marcelino made 10 changes to the side that faced Liverpool in the Europa League when Villarreal hosted Deportivo last weekend and could make more changes after a lacklustre performance. The manager has a fully fit squad to select from and we could see the strike partnership of Cedric Bakambu and Roberto Soldado reunited on Sunday. Eric Bailly should return to the centre of defence as the sought-after 22-year-old has produced some outstanding displays at the heart of defence since returning from injury. Denis Suarez and Jonathan dos Santos could lineup after starting from the bench last weekend.

Possible Line-ups

Sporting Gijon 4-2-3-1 formation: Cuellar; Lora, Hernandez, Mere, Lopez; Alvarez, Rachid; Carmona, Halilovic, Jony; Sanabria

Villarreal 4-4-2 formation: Asenjo; Gaspar, Bailly, Ruiz, Rukavina; Santos, Pina, Bruno, Suarez; Bakambu, Soldado

Sporting Gijon vs Villarreal Prediction

Gijon were left ruing Nacho Cases’ second half dismissal when Getafe equalised 10 minutes from the end of their relegation six-pointer last Sunday. Abelardo’s side must try to win its final home game and hope Getafe drop points in Sevilla against Real Betis. Gijon bounced back from a 6-0 mauling by Barcelona to defeat Eibar 2-0 in the last home game and had previously defeated Sevilla 2-1. They have now won three of the last four at El Molinon where they have scored in all but two of the last 12 league games. Villarreal cannot improve their standing in La Liga and the fourth Champions League spot is already assured. The club’s focus in recent weeks has been the Europa League which is evident from the league form which has yielded four points from the last five matches. Villarreal have not been noted as a good away side for the last two seasons and while they won at Eibar and Valencia last month, they have failed to score in 8 of their 17 away games in La Liga. The mood in the Villarreal camp must be down after their Europa League exit and Gijon can profit with nothing at stake to lift their opponents.
