AC Milan vs Arsenal Preview
Arsene Wenger is under increased pressure at Arsenal following a string of defeats and run of bad form. Two 3-0 trashings by champions-elect Manchester City were followed by a 2-1 loss away to Brighton on Sunday lunchtime. That latest defeat means it’s six losses from their last seven and Wenger’s side sit just five points ahead of seventh-placed Burnley in the Premier League and a whopping 33 points off the leaders.
The Europa League is Wenger’s last chance to take something positive away from this season after being eliminated from the FA Cup by Nottingham Forest and being well-beaten in the FA Cup final by Manchester City. However, a trip to the San Siro is probably not what Wenger needs at the moment and will hope that history is not repeated given his side took a 4-0 battering last time they visited here in the Champions League back in 2012.
Alexandre Lacazette and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang are both unavailable and so Wenger will call upon Danny Welbeck to lead the attack. Both Hector Bellerin and Aaron Ramsey were rested against Brighton at the weekend and will feature in Thursday’s starting XI.
Unlike Arsenal, AC Milan are in terrific form and are unbeaten in their last 13 games across all competitions. Their last game saw them progress to the Coppa Italia final after winning on penalties against Lazio. Prior to this, they had won five consecutive games without conceding a single goal. They’ll be confident of winning this first leg against an Arsenal side who have only won once in their last 8 games on the road.
AC Milan’s top scorers, Patrick Cutrone and Suso will likely cause Arsenal’s leaky defence problems and Gennaro Gattuso will look to keep his defence tight like he has done in Serie A this season. Winning the Europa League is a real possibility for Milan this season and a chance for them to gain a place in next seasons Champions League given that it is unlikely they will qualify to play with Europe’s elite via the league.

Given the difference in current form between the two sides, it’s hard to see Arsenal picking up a win on Thursday. AC Milan have been solid at the San Siro and have only conceded one goal in their last six games on home turf. Arsenal have problems at the moment and Wenger is under increased pressure to pick things back up but it’s unlikely he’ll be able to turn things around in this first leg. He’ll be hoping to keep AC’s opportunities to a minimum and produce a result at the Emirates in two weeks time but for this leg, we can’t see anything other than a win for the home side. A Milan win seems very good value based on current form and taking into account the home advantage.
