Champions League preview – Arsenal vs Olympiakos prediction

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger is without a number of players for this Champions League game.  Olivier Giroud is suspended and Jack Wilshere, Danny Welbeck, Mikel Arteta, Mathieu Flamini and Tomas Rosicky are all out injured.  Francis Coquelin is also struggling to make it and therefore Aaron Ramsey may have drop in to a deeper role.

Olympiakos are still without Luka Milivojevic, who is still suspended and central defender Manuel De Costa, who is injured.  In place of De Costa will come Alberto Botia and Konstantinos Fortounis will continue behind the strikers, if Alejandro Dominguez fails to make it.

Olympiakos: 4-3-1-2 formation: Roberto; Elabdellaoui, Botia, Siovas, Masuaku; Cambiasso, Kassami, Salino; Fortounis; Pardo, Ideye

  • There have been over 2.5 goals scored in 4 of Arsenal ‘s previous 10 matches
  • There have been over 2.5 goals scored in 6 of Olympiakos’ previous 10 matches

Prediction

Arsenal coming in to this match knowing they can not afford to drop any more points having tasted defeat in Zagreb.  The team seem to have recovered from their defeat in Croatia and the following one at Stamford Bridge against Chelsea by defeating Spurs in the League Cup and Leicester in the Premier League.  However, Arsenal have only won 50% of their last 8 Champions League home matches.

Olympiakos had a night to forget as they lost 3-0 at home to Bayern Munich in week 1 of the Champions League.  The club are having no such trouble in their domestic league, as they boast a 100% record having played 5 matches.  However, the club lost all of their away group matches in the 2014/15 Champions League, including a 2-0 loss at Malmo.

Arsenal should have little trouble in claiming the 3 points in this one.  Olympiakos have troubled them in Greece but never on home soil.
