FA Cup preview – Derby County vs Manchester United prediction.

Derby County manager Paul Clement may be tempted to give one or two second string players a chance to shine following disappointing performances in the last month. Craig Bryson started against Hartlepool in the previous round while former Aston Villa team mates Andreas Weimann and Darren Bent have plenty of experience against Premier League opposition. January signing Abdoul Camara is in line for his full debut after three substitute appearances.

Manchester United left back Matteo Darmian is expected to be fit despite coming off with a nasty looking injury in the second half against Southampton on Saturday. Luke Shaw, Marcos Rojo, Ashley Young and Antonio Valencia remain sidelined leaving Louis Van Gaal with few options for change. Bastian Schweinsteiger, Michael Carrick and Phil Jones are nursing knocks and may not be risked. Adnan Januzaj and Andreas Pereira have impressed for the Under-21 side and may get the chance of more first team experience.

Possible Line-ups

Derby County: 4-3-3 formation: Carson; Christie, Keogh, Shackwell, Warnock; Butterfield, Thorne, Johnson; Ince, Martin, Camara

Manchester United: 4-2-3-1 formation: De Gea; Darmian, Smalling, Blind, Borthwick-Jackson; Fellaini, Schneiderlin; Lingard, Herrera, Martial; Rooney

  • Over the course of their previous 10 matches, Manchester United have scored an average of 1.1 goals and conceded an average of 1.5 goals per game
  • There have been over 2.5 goals scored in 6 of Derby County’ previous 10 matches
  • There have been over 2.5 goals scored in 5 of Manchester United’s previous 10 matches

Prediction

Championship side Derby go into the FA Cup fourth round tie on the back of two heavy defeats, losing by three goals at home to Birmingham prior to Monday’s 4-1 defeat at Burnley. It means the Rams have picked up one point from their last four league games and are six points adrift of an automatic promotion place. Paul Clement’s team won 2-1 at League Two Hartlepool in the third round and require another positive result to help get the season back on track.

Manchester United slipped up at home to Southampton on Saturday ending a run of five games without defeat. Manager Louis van Gaal is under increasing pressure even when his team wins as experienced after a lacklustre 1-0 victory against League One Sheffield United in the previous round. United were drawn against Championship sides in the third and fourth round of the League Cup earlier this season, overcoming Ipswich 3-0 before going out to Middlesbrough on penalties.

Derby players may have had their minds on this tie in two recent games and with nerves creeping into United’s game an upset could be on the cards.
