Coppa Italia preview – Inter Milan vs Juventus prediction.

Inter Milan central defenders Jeison Murillo and Miranda are suspended for the second leg against Juventus on Wednesday. Left back Alex Telles and midfielder Gary Medel were withdrawn during Sunday’s Serie A encounter and are doubtful starters. Marcelo Brozovic is eligible for the cup tie after missing the last match through suspension and Stevan Jovetic could be recalled to attack after Inter seek a way to breach Juve’s defence for the first time in four attempts this season.

Giorgio Chiellini lasted for 36 minutes of his comeback game before coming off with injury and with Leonardo Bonucci are also suffering from a knock, Juventus could be forced to switch to four at the back. Martin Caceres remains sidelined so Daniele Rugani will get a chance to feature and Max Allegri’s only other injury concern is midfielder Claudio Marchisio who is struggling with a thigh injury. Allegri could give opportunities to Simone Zaza in attack and midfielder Kwadwo Asamoah who returned to the bench on Sunday after a period of injury.

Possible Line-ups

Inter Milan 4-3-3 formation: Handanovic; Nagatamo, D’Ambrosio, Jesus, Telles; Melo, Kondogbia, Brozovic; Ljajic, Jovetic, Eder

Juventus 4-4-2 formation: Neto; Lichtsteiner, Barzagli, Rugani, Evra; Cuadrado, Pogba, Khedira, Asamoah; Zaza, Morata

  • Over the course of their previous 10 matches, Juventus have scored an average of 1.7 goals and conceded an average of 0.2 goals per game
  • There have been over 2.5 goals scored in 3 of Inter Milan’s previous 10 matches
  • There have been over 2.5 goals scored in 8 of Juventus’ previous 10 matches

Prediction

Inter appear to have an impossible task to overturn a three goal first leg deficit against Juventus who are hitting the top of their form. The sides met again in the league on Sunday when Inter rarely threatened in the 2-0 defeat in Turin. Inter did put three past Cagliari when joining the competition in the fifth round and twice scored three goals in a game in Serie A last month. However, the opponents Sampdoria and Verona fall some way short of the class of Juventus.

Alvaro Morata scored twice in the first leg as Allegri’s men showed more cutting edge despite having slightly less possession of the ball. Juventus have not conceded against domestic rivals in the last ten league and cup games. They beat Lazio 1-0 in Rome when entering this season’s competition and the 0-0 draw in Bologna two weeks ago ended a run of nine consecutive away wins in domestic competition.

This tie looks out of reach for Inter who may focus on damage limitation in the absence of their best central defensive pairing.
