La Liga preview – Las Palmas vs Celta Vigo prediction.

Brazilian striker Willian Jose was back among the goals with a brace at Levante last weekend and will lead the attack for Las Palmas when they entertain Celta Vigo on Sunday. Quique Setien has no new injury concerns following the 1-0 defeat against Valencia in the Copa del Rey on Thursday. Midfielder Vicente Gomez will be out of action for up to three months after damaging collarbone ligaments in the first leg in Valencia last week. Javi Castellano and Hernan remain sidelined while Pedro Bigas comes into contention having recovered from a knee injury.

Celta Vigo hitman Nolito has been back in training but his absence from the starting eleven could be extended as the club negotiates with a number of Premier League clubs eager for his signature. Pedro Hernandez and John Guidetti staked their claim with goals in the 3-2 Copa del Rey victory against Atletico Madrid on Wednesday. January signing Marcelo Diaz must wait for his debut while he recovers from a muscle strain.

Prediction

Relegation-threatened Las Palmas were eliminated from the Copa del Rey in midweek when losing the second leg 1-0 at home to Valencia, going out 2-1 on aggregate. They come into Sunday’s game on the back of successive league defeats, 0-3 at home to Atletico Madrid and 2-3 at bottom-of-the-league Levante last weekend. Las Palmas have won four of 11 home games in the league this season but have yet to defeat a team in the top half. Their 2-0 victory over Sevilla in September coming when the visitors were floundering near the bottom.

Fifth-placed Celta Vigo hit a slump in form after Christmas, losing four of the last five games in La Liga. Manager Eduardo Berizzo was relieved to get three points after conceding three goals when Levante visited two weeks ago which will have turned to dismay a week later when outplayed in the 3-0 defeat at Rayo Vallecano. Thanks to a good cup run, Celta Vigo have now won three, drawn one and lost one of their last five games and may be turning the corner.

Celta Vigo’s victory in the Calderon can spur a return to early season form at the expense of struggling Las Palmas.
