La Liga preview – Las Palmas vs Atletico Madrid prediction.

Injury hit Las Palmas suffered a further blow when David Simon picked up a fifth yellow card of the campaign against Malaga last weekend and is suspended for the clash with Atletico on Sunday. Quique Setien is running out of fit defenders with Pedros Bigas and Angel Lopez sidelined with injury while Antolin Alacarez is doubtful. Midfielders Hernan and Javi Castellano will be absent and Nauset Aleman must prove his fitness in order to be considered.

Luciano Vietto will continue to partner Anton Griezmann for Atletico Madrid as Fernando Torres struggles with an ankle problem.  Diego Simeone has no new injury concerns and is expected to start with the same lineup that won at Celta Vigo last weekend. Tiago has been out of action since November and is working towards a comeback in late February/early March.

Possible Line-ups

Las Palmas: 4-2-3-1 formation: Varas; Garcia, Aythami, Garrido, D. Castellano; Gomez, Roque; Zhar, Tana, Viera; Araujo

Atletico Madrid: 4-4-2 formation: Oblak; Juanfran, Gimenez, Godin, Luis; Saul, Fernandez, Gabi, Koke; Vietto, Griezmann

Statistics

  • Las Palmas have won 5 drawn 3 and lost 2 of their last 10 matches
  • Atletico Madrid have won 8 drawn 1 and lost 1 of their last 10 matches
  • Over the course of their previous 10 matches, Las Palmas have scored an average of 1.8 goals and conceded an average of 1.4 goals per game
  • Over the course of their previous 10 matches, Atletico Madrid have scored an average of 1.6 goals and conceded an average of 0.4 goals per game
  • There have been over 2.5 goals scored in 6 of Las Palmas’ previous 10 matches
  • There have been over 2.5 goals scored in 3 of Atletico Madrid’s previous 10 matches

Prediction

Newly promoted Las Palmas are making a good show of trying to stay in the top flight and qualified for the quarter-finals of the Copa del Rey beating Eibar home and away in the last round. Setien’s side has only lost one of its last six home games in La Liga, however this is first visit to Gran Canaria by one of this season’s top three teams.

Atletico look to retain their position at the top of La Liga this weekend. Simeone’s men have a lot of momentum having won 10 of the last 12 league games. A 1-0 defeat at Malaga ended a run of five consecutive victories but Atletico have returned from the Christmas break with three league wins in succession, including away wins at Real Sociedad (0-2) and Celta Vigo (0-2) last Sunday. They have conceded just one away goal in the last five games and have the best defence in La Liga having conceded just 8 goals in 19 games.

Atletico Madrid can inflict Las Palmas with its first defeat since the Christmas break and are taken to win by a narrow margin.
