Liverpool will be without Sadio Mane once again as he is still at the African Cup of Nations but they’ve been boosted by the return of central defender Joel Matip. Jordan Henderson should be okay to play despite picking up a heel injury at the weekend. The return of Philippe Coutinho gives the Reds an added dimension in attack and he’ll link up with the mercurial Roberto Firmino either side of central striker Daniel Sturridge.

Southampton look set to be without influential defender Virgil van Dijk who is awaiting scan results on a knee injury. With Jose Fonte gone, Saints will be forced to play Jack Stephens alongside Maya Yoshida. Steven Davis has fitness to prove and the visitors have an ever growing injury list with Charlie Austin, Sofiane Boufal, Jake Hesketh, Alex McCarthy, Matt Target and Jeremy Pied in the treatment room.

Liverpool’s form has not been great recently but they did field a weakened side in the draw and subsequent 1-0 replay win over Plymouth in the FA Cup. They have recently drawn 1-1 with Manchester United at Old Trafford but were clearly missing some defensive solidity in the 3-2 home defeat to Swansea City at the weekend. The return of Joel Matip will be a huge boost for the hosts here.

Southampton couldn’t back up their first leg win and were beaten 1-0 away at Burnley but have looked in pretty good shape since then. They recorded a 1-0 win over Norwich in the FA Cup and come into this match on the back of a comfortable 3-0 home win over Leicester City.

Liverpool is famous for big nights at Anfield and the home crowd will need to be their 11th man here. The Reds have a dynamic front three that will cause any side problems, let alone Southampton’s weakened defence for this game. Claude Puel is likely to try and sit on the lead but I can see Liverpool picking them apart here.
