Lyon vs Villarreal Preview
Lyon have lost three of their last four games with their only win coming from a 2-1 victory over Montpellier in the Coupe de France last week. Their most recent game was a disappointing 2-0 defeat at home to Rennes which leaves them in fourth position in Ligue 1, five points adrift of second-placed Monaco who are currently sitting in the second Champions League spot along with PSG. Their home form this season has been excellent, losing just twice and proving they are hard to break down at the Groupama Stadium.
Lyon manager Bruno Génésio will have a full squad to choose from with the exception of Rafael who is still out through injury. Génésio will likely rotate his squad after the loss against Rennes on Sunday and is expected to recall ex-Manchester United midfielder, Memphis Depay who will replace Bertrand Traoré.
Villareal have lost two on the trot against Betis and most recently, Alaves following a four-match winning streak in La Liga. They have now dropped five points below Real Madrid who claim the last of the four Champions League spots for next season. Finding the net away from home has been an issue for Villareal and they have failed to score more than one goal in any game on the road since November. However, Lyon only managed to keep one clean sheet in the eight Europa League matches so far and so Villareal manager Javier Calleja will looking for his side to get on the scoresheet and grab a vital away goal in this first leg.
Lyon have a handful of players out through injury including Ramiro Guerra, Andrés Fernández, Bruno Soriano, Rúben Semedo and Nicola Sansone. Calleja will most likely rotate his squad from that which suffered defeat to Alaves on Saturday with Columbian Roger Martínez being replaced by Turkish striker Enes Ünal while Dani Raba and Rodri should replace Samu Castillejo and Javi Fuego in midfield.
