Giulio Donati is in line to make his debut for Mainz following his move from Leverkusen this week. The Italian defender brings competition at right back where Daniel Brosinski has played for the past two seasons. Coach Martin Schmidt has no new injury concerns and Elkin Soto has resumed light training as he recovers from summer knee surgery. Top scorer Yoshinori Muto is set to return to the starting eleven after being used as a substitute on Saturday.

Borussia central midfielder Granit Xhaka is serving the second of a three-match ban for being red carded in the 3-2 victory over Darmstadt prior to the winter break. Thorgen Hazard missed the 3-1 defeat against Dortmund last weekend with illness and is a slight doubt for Friday’s fixture. Tony Jantschke, Alvaro Dominguez, Andre Hahn, Nico Schulz and Patrick Herman are sidelined with long-term injuries.

Prediction

Mainz are eighth in the Bundesliga and unbeaten in their last three home games. Schmidt’s side has shown erratic form at times this season and has lost four of nine home games in the league. Mainz come into this game on the back of away defeats at Hertha Berlin (2-0) and Ingolstadt (1-0) and have failed to score in the last three.

Borussia’s form has been streaky this season.  Their Bundesliga campaign began with five successive defeats before racing up the standings with six consecutive wins on the way to an unbeaten run of 10 league games. The run ended on their last away trip with an emphatic 5-0 defeat at Leverkusen, they bounced back with a 3-2 home win against Darmstadt before losing 3-1 at home to Dortmund last week.

It’s a risk to predict a winner between these two on current form but Mainz have a great opportunity to end their goal drought against a side that has managed just one clean sheet in the last ten league games.
