Bundesliga preview – Monchengladbach vs Dortmund prediction.

Martin Hinteregger has joined Monchengladbach on a season-long loan and is expected to fit straight into the back four in place of Danes Christensen. Other new signing, Jonas Hoffman is unlikely to be given a start against former club Dortmund. Midfielder Granit Xhaka serves the first of a three-match ban for being sent off against Darmstadt last month and Mahmoud Dahoud could provide cover. Ibrahima Traore looked sharp in the friendly at Bochum on Saturday and could make the lineup in preference to Thorgan Hazard.

Marco Reus returns for Dortmund after missing two games prior to the winter break with a recurrence of his abductor muscle problem. Erik Durm was a regular at right back last season, the 23-year-old is fully recovered from a knee operation and is expected to be part of the squad after catching up with his fitness. The Bundesliga’s top scorer Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (18 goals in 17 games) is receiving transfer interest from the Premier League but will hope to carry his scoring exploits for Dortmund into the New Year.

Possible Line-ups

Monchengladbach: 4-4-2 formation: Sommer; Korb, Hinteregger, Elvedi, Wendt; Traore, Nordveit, Dahoud, Johnson; Stindl, Raffael

Dortmund: 4-3-3 formation: Burki; Ginter, Papastathopoulos, Schmeltzer; Gundogan, Weigl, Kagawa; Mkhitaryan, Aubameyang, Reus

  • Over the course of their previous 10 matches, Dortmund have scored an average of 2.1 goals and conceded an average of 1.2 goals per game
  • There have been over 2.5 goals scored in 8 of Monchengladbach’s previous 10 matches

Prediction

December was a month of inconsistency for Monchengladbach who were knocked out of the Champions League and FA Cup while suffering their biggest league defeat of the season, 5-0 at Leverkusen. However, that was their only loss in the last 12 Bundesliga games. They have gone seven league games unbeaten at Borussia-Park where they defeated runaway leaders Bayern Munich 3-1 on 5 December.

Second-placed Dortmund are fighting off bids for their star players as they look to qualify for the Champions League and wrestle the Bundesliga crown from Bayern Munich. Their Bundesliga title bid is bolstered by home form where they have only dropped two points so far in this campaign. Their record on the road is not so impressive, losing two of the last three (3-1 at Hamburg and 2-1 at Koln) to add to the 5-0 thrashing at Bayern Munich in October.

Home advantage may be enough for Monchengladbach to spring a surprise victory against Dortmund.
