Champions League preview – Malmo vs Shakhtar Donetsk prediction

Having picked up a red card against Real Madrid in Malmo’s previous Champions League game, full-back Yotun is suspended and Felipe Carvalho may feature at left-back. Zlatan Azinovic and Guillermo Molins are both out with injuries but the personnel and shape of the Malmo team will not change much from their previous outing.

Shakhtar’s squad looks fit and healthy for the strip to Sweden, with Brazilian midfielder Taison being the only doubt. Therefore, manager Mircea Lucescu may opt to go with the same team which won at the weekend, with the addition of Taison in place of Bernard.

Possible Line-ups

Malmo: 4-4-2 formation: Wiland; Tinnerholm, Arnason, Bengtsson, Carvalho; Rodic, Adu, Lewicki, Berget; Djurdjic, Rosenberg

Shakhtar Donetsk: 4-1-3-1-1 formation: Pyatov; Srna, Kucher, Rakitskiy, Ismaily; Stepanenko; Fred, Marlos, Taison; Alex Teixeira; Gladkiy

  • Over the course of their previous 10 matches, Shakhtar Donetsk have scored an average of 2.5 goals and conceded an average of 1.3 goals per game
  • There have been over 2.5 goals scored in 4 of Malmo’s previous 10 matches
  • There have been over 2.5 goals scored in 8 of Shakhtar Donetsk’s previous 10 matches

Prediction

Both Malmo and Shakhtar come in to this match still looking for their first points in the season’s Champions League. Malmo started their campaign with a 2-0 defeat in Paris and then went down by the same scoreline at home to Real Madrid. Although both games ended in defeat, Malmo have not been taken apart by PSG or Real Madrid, as many people expected and come in to this match following a good 3-0 win in their domestic league at the weekend.

Shakhtar also enjoyed an excellent result at the weekend, as they defeated Dynamo Kiev 3-0 to move top of the Premier League in Ukraine. However, much like their opponents Malmo, wins have been very difficult to come by in the Champions League and Shakhtar went down 4-0 at Real Madrid before losing 3-0 at home to PSG. Shakhtar do not tend to travel well in Europe and Malmo will be looking to take advantage of that.

This could be a tight game, with a low scoring draw a possibility.
