Marseille vs Braga Preview

Marseille could only manage a draw at the weekend against St Etienne which will be a bit of a disappointment for them. Florian Thauvin continued his fantastic form this season though, grabbing an early goal in that contest. The result leaves the side 3rd in Ligue 1, just 1 point off 2nd placed Monaco.

The main injury worry for the hosts is in goal, as Steve Mandanda had to come off before half-time on Saturday and is expected to miss out here. Yohann Pelé will be the man to step in. Lucas Ocampos and Grégory Sertic are both doubts for Marseille too, while left-back Jordan Amavi will be hoping for a start after being on the bench at the weekend.

Braga are comfortably the 4th best side in Portugal this season, and they are kind of in a league of their own. Braga sit 7 points behind 3rd placed Sporting CP though they are also 10 points ahead of 5th placed Rio Ave. This should mean that they can give the Europa League a real go this season.

The team news for the visitors is that Raúl Silva will miss the trip to France due to suspension. Marafona is out injured for Braga and will play no part, while Ricardo Ferreira and Fransergio are no longer in the club’s Europa League squad. Danilo is back available again after serving a suspension at the weekend and is very likely to start in central midfield.

Marseille vs Braga Prediction

Marseille are actually in very good form at the moment and go into this match as big favourites. They have one of the best recent records in the whole of Europe, as they are unbeaten in their last 10 competitive matches, having won 8 of those. They are getting on the scoresheet very often too, having scored at least two goals in their last 8 matches.

Braga are in decent form too recently, having won 5 of their last 7 matches. In European competition their defence has not been too great though, as they have gone 22 European games without a clean sheet, which could be a big problem against a side that loves to score goals.

The group stages weren’t amazing for the French side, with draws against Red Bull Salzburg and Konyaspor as well as a defeat against Vitoria. Braga on the other hand were also a bit shaky with defeats against Turkish and Bulgarian opposition.

Marseille have played Portuguese opposition on 12 occasions in the past and only won on 3 occasions. Those wins were all at home and we expect Marseille to win this game and take an aggregate lead to Portugal.

These two sides have met each other in the very same competition in recent seasons. They were both in the same Europa League group back in the 2015/16 season, and both sides got a victory each.

Braga edged out Marseille in the game in Portugal by 3 goals to 2, with Alan grabbing the winner for Braga after a flurry of late goals. The fixture in Marseille went the French side’s way, with Georges-Kevin N’Koudou scoring the winner in a 1-0 win.
