Marseille vs Salzburg Preview

Marseille and Salzburg finished first and second in qualifying group I and the French side will have to step up on previous form to justify favouritism in the first leg.

Japanese defender Hiroki Sakai suffered a knee injury during Marseilles victory over Lille at the weekend and will be sidelined along with Boubacar Kamara and Steve Mandanda who are also nursing injuries.

Konstantinos Mitroglou scored twice in the 5-1 win on Saturday, taking his tally to eight from eight in the league. But, the Greek forward is facing pressure from Valere Germain who is the club’s top scorer in the Europa League this term and 19-year-old Clinton N’Jie who has been impressing when coming off the bench this season.

Salzburg welcome back Diadie Samassekou who was suspended for Red Bull’s last Europa League match and his return should allow Xaver Schlager to play in behind the front two of Munas Dabbur and Hwang Hee-Chan.

There are doubts surrounding the inclusion of Amadou Haidara who was withdrawn after 30 minutes of the cup game against Mattersburg and didn’t make the squad for last weekend’s Bundesliga fixture. Enock Mwepu has replaced the Malian midfielder and is on standby to make his debut in the competition on Thursday.

Marseille vs Salzburg Prediction

Marseille beat Red Bull Leipzig 5-2 to qualify for the Europa League semi finals 5-3 on aggregate and have followed up with high scoring home and away victories in the league. The French side have scored 13 goals in the last three games while conceding five at the other end.

Rudi Garcia’s side has a formidable home record, having suffered only one defeat in the Stade Velodrome from 21 games in all competitions.

Salzburg are 11 points clear at the top of the Austrian Bundesliga with five games to play and come into this game on the back of three wins and a draw in the last four matches. The Austrian champions have eliminated Real Sociedad, Borussia Dortmund and Lazio in the knockout stage and have only lost two of the last 21 games in all competitions.

Both teams have been finding the net with relative ease in recent games so there is every chance this could be a higher scoring affair than when they met in the group stage. Munas Dabbur is the leading scorer for Salzburg and he’s netted nine times so far in this competition, scoring the first goal on five occasions.

Valere Germain is Marseille’s leading scorer in the competition with seven goals but with his place in doubt, another goalscorer option is Florian Thauvin who has scored 19 in Ligue 1 and three so far in the Europa League.
