International Champions Cup football tips – New York Red Bulls vs Benfica prediction

Having got a great result in their opening International Champions Cup match against Premier league title holders, Chelsea, New York Red Bulls may opt to keep a similar starting line-up for the game against Benfica. Midfielder Sean Davis should retain his place in midfield after netting twice against Jose Mourinho’s men.

Benfica will have to do without the experienced Luisao, who was sent off in the match against Fiorentina. Otherwise, manager Rui Vitoria will be generally pleased with how his team have been playing and may keep a similar line-up to the one which started the match against Viola.

Possible Line-ups

New York Red Bulls: 4-3-3 formation: Reynish; Miller, Ouimette, McClaws, Adams; Plewa, Stolz, Davis; Obekop, Bedoya, Tsonis

Benfica: 4-2-3-1 formation: Cesar; Silvio, Jardel, López, Eliseu; Pizzi, Samaris; Talisca, Gaitan, Jonas; Lima

  • New York Red Bulls have won 7, drawn 1 and lost 2 of their last 10 matches
  • Benfica have won 6, drawn 3 and lost 1 of their last 10 matches
  • Over the course of their previous 10 matches, New York Red Bulls have scored an average of 2.4 goals and conceded an average of 1 goal per game
  • Over the course of their previous 10 matches, Benfica have scored an average of 2.4 goals and conceded an average of 0.6 goals per game
  • There have been over 2.5 goals scored in 7 of New York Red Bulls’ previous 10 matches
  • There have been over 2.5 goals scored in 6 of Benfica’s previous 10 matches
  • Benfica have lost both of their previous two games in the 2015 International Champions Cup

New York Red Bulls pulled a shock result out of the bag against Chelsea in their first match of the 2015 International Champions Cup. Even with an under-strength team, Jesse Marsch’s players were able to take advantage of some poor Chelsea defending, even though the Premier League Champions started with a very strong steam. Marsch will be hoping his team can use the confidence gained from the surprise win, to pick up another great victory over Benfica.

The Portuguese giants have been unlucky not to pick up any points in their first two matches. An entertaining match against PSG, saw Benfica come out on the wrong side of a 3-2 scoreline. They then went on to lose their second match on penalties against Fiorentina, despite holding the Italian’s to a 0-0 draw.

With a packed crowd in the Red Bull Arena, the home team will be hoping to make it another great night for their fans. However, Benfica have the ability to trouble them going forward and the match could go all the way to penalties.
