Salzburg vs Borussia Dortmund Preview

Salzburg head into this game with the advantage after pulling off a shock 2-1 win against Dortmund in the first leg of this Europa League round last Thursday. Marco Rose’s side were 5/1 underdogs to win the first leg but two second-half goals in the space of seven minutes from midfielder Valon Berisha gave the visitors a two-goal lead with just over half an hour to play. Andre Schurrle did manage to pull one back for Dortmund but it wasn’t enough as the visitors held onto their lead.

Salzburg are now favourites to progress to the next round and their two away goals give them a huge advantage when they host Dortmund at the Red Bull Arena on Thursday evening. They’ll be confident of not suffering defeat given they are unbeaten in their last 32 matches across all competitions. They’re also unbeaten at home all season where they’ve scored an impressive 31 goals in 13 league games and conceding just 7.

Marco Rose has the pick of the bunch with all players being fit to play. he’s likely to name the same lineup that achieved victory against Dortmund last week in hope of a similar result on home turf. Moanes Dabour will hope to add to his tally of goals in Europe with the Israel international picking up three goals in four games so far.

Borussia Dortmund have a job on their hands if they want to progress to the quarter-finals of the Europa League. Conceding two away goals mean they need to score at least as many and with Salzburg only conceding 7 goals in the league all season and only letting one in six games in the group stages, Peter Stöger’s side could be in for a tough night.

Dortmund haven’t been as convincing this season as we’ve come to expect from them. The defeat to Salzburg was their first of 2018 but from the 13 games they’ve played this year, they have only won six, drawing seven of them. Stöger’s side are slight favourites to win on Thursday but it’s whether or not his side can overcome the two goal deficit that they incurred in the first leg that is the question.

On-loan striker Michy Batshuayi scored a brace in Dortmund’s 3-2 win against Frankfurt at the weekend after coming off the bench in the 62nd minute which should be enough to secure his place in the starting lineup on Thursday evening. Stöger will be without Andriy Yarmolenko, Sebastian Rode, Erik Durm, Shinji Kagawa and Raphael Guerreiro through injury while Manuel Akanji is ineligible to play in this competition for Dortmund.

Salzburg vs Borussia Dortmund Prediction

Salzburg will fancy their chances of gaining a place in the quarter-finals given the two away goals they collected last week. A goal from the home side would mean Dortmund would need to find the net three times in order to qualify without the need for extra time and goals is something Marco Rose’s side haven’t been short of this season. Picking a winning side in this match isn’t an easy decision and with that in mind, the best bet may be to go for both teams to score.

Last week’s first leg of this Europa League round was the first time these two sides had met and Salzburg produced a shock victory over the hosts. Two second-half goals in the space of seven minutes gave the visitors a two-goal lead and despite Andre Schurrle clawing a goal back in the 62nd minute, Dortmund were unable to find a second and go into this return leg needing a win to progress.
