A 2-1 defeat away to league-leaders Porto at the weekend ended Sportings five-game unbeaten run. It also all but ended their title hopes and put a dent in their chances of qualifying for Champions League football next season as they are now 3 points behind second-placed Benfica and 6 behind leaders Porto with a vastly inferior goal difference. Winning the Europa League could now be their best chance of qualifying for that competition and a favourable draw means that Jorge Jesus will be confident his side can get one step closer to achieving that.
Sporting got past FC Astana in the last round of the Europa League after a 3-1 win away from home followed by a 3-3 at Estádio José Alvalade. They have no problems finding the net and so it may be a case of whether or not they can contain Plzen’s attack on Thursday evening.
Seydou Doumbia came off injured in Sportings defeat to Porto at the weekend and will likely miss Thursday’s match. Cristiano Piccini and Bas Dost are also doubts eith injuries while Radosav Petrovic and Gelson Martins should make a return to the lineup.
Plzen are flying high in the Czech Republic league at the moment and top the table with 47 points, nine points ahead of second-placed Slavia Prague. They suffered a disappointing 1-0 at home to Jihlava in the league last week which ended a six-game unbeaten run but their league form has been pretty solid despite this. The visitors have also scored in their last seven Europa League matches and will be looking to pick up a vital away goal on Thursday to increase their chances of progressing following the return leg in two weeks time.
Aside from Marian Cisovsky, who is currently out injured, Pavel Vrba has a full squad to choose from is not likely to make many changes from his regular lineup.
