FA Cup preview – Wycombe Wanderers vs Aston Villa prediction

20-year-old Jason McCarthy is hoping to feature for Wycombe after extending his loan spell from Southampton until 3 February. First choice goalkeeper Matt Ingram was sent off in the 2-0 defeat against Morecambe on Saturday which opens the way for 20-year-old Alexander Lynch to make his full debut.

Gabbi Agbonlahor and Adama Traore come into contention having played little part for Aston Villa this term. Agbonlahor has been nursing a niggle over Christmas but should be fit if called upon by manager Remi Garde. Alan Hutton was forced off with a hamstring problem in the 3-1 at Sunderland on Saturday and will remain at home. Colombian midfielder Carlos Sanchez is nursing a similar injury while Craig Gardner and Jordan Amavi are not options as they recover from serious knee injuries.

Possible Line-ups

Wycombe: 4-4-2 formation: Ingram; McCarthy, Stewart, Pierre, Jombarti; Harriman, Bloomfield, O’Nien, Wood; Thompson, Hayes

Aston Villa: 4-2-3-1 formation: Guzan; Kozak, Richards, Clark, Cissokho; Gueye, Westwood; Traore, Veretout, Gestede; Ayew

  • Over the course of their previous 10 matches, Aston Villa have scored an average of 0.7 goals and conceded an average of 2 goals per game
  • There have been over 2.5 goals scored in 5 of Wycombe’s previous 10 matches
  • There have been over 2.5 goals scored in 4 of Aston Villa’s previous 10 matches

Prediction

Wycombe have never defeated a top flight side but came close when holding Chelsea to a 1-1 draw at Adams Park in the League Cup nine years ago. Wanderers were beaten 8-3 at home to Aston Villa in the same competition a season earlier. They are currently pushing for promotion from League Two and had won three consecutive games before losing 2-0 against Morecambe in difficult conditions on Saturday.

Aston Villa have not tasted victory since defeating Birmingham 1-0 in the League Cup third round on 22 September. It took until extra time to eliminate League Two side Notts County 5-3 in the previous round. Villa reached the final of the FA Cup last season but lost to lower league opposition, Sheffield United and Millwall,  in the two previous seasons.

This tie would have all the indications of a giant killing act if not for Wycombe’s failure to cope with a heavy pitch last weekend. With similar conditions expected on Saturday this could be taken to a replay
