Premier League preview – Aston Villa vs West Ham prediction

Aston Villa forward Rudi Gestede will be hoping he did enough to earn a place in the starting line up after replacing Scott Sinclair in the fight back against Newcastle on Saturday. Remi Garde has no new injury concerns following the 1-1 draw on Tyneside although hopes of Micah Richards making a Boxing Day comeback are slim. Craig Gardner is about three weeks away from returning after suffering an horrendous tackle in pre-season and summer signing Jordan Amavi is out for the season with knee ligament damage.

West Ham midfielder Manuel Lanzini could add a much needed cutting edge should he return as expected on Saturday. Striker Andy Carroll missed the clash with former club Newcastle because of groin strain and there remains a doubt whether he will make a full recovery for the trip to the Midlands. Slaven Bilic must soldier on without a number key players, Dimitri Payet, Victor Moses and Winston Reid are not expecting to see action until later in January while Diafro Sakho could be out for longer with his troublesome thigh problem.

Possible Line-ups

Aston Villa: 4-3-1-2 formation: Guzan; Hutton, Okore, Lescott, Bacuna; Westwood, Sanchez, Gueye; Veretout; Sinclair, Ayew

West Ham: 4-1-4-1 formation: Adrian; Tomkins, Collins, Ogbonna, Cresswell; Song; Antonio, Kouyate, Noble, Zarate; Jelavic

Statistics

  • Over the course of their previous 10 matches, West Ham have scored an average of 1 goal and conceded an average of 1.2 goals per game
  • There have been over 2.5 goals scored in 5 of Aston Villa’s previous 10 matches
  • There have been over 2.5 goals scored in 4 of West Ham’s previous 10 matches

Prediction

Bottom of the league Aston Villa have not won since the opening game of the season but will take some encouragement from two draws in the last three games. Both results were away from home, at Southampton and Newcastle, and their inability to keep clean sheets at Villa Park is a concern. The Villains’ luck held out in a 0-0 draw against Manchester City but three of their six home defeats this season have been by a 1-0 scoreline.

West Ham are eighth in the table despite not having won in their last seven games. Bilic can point to the absence of key performers and must rely on his third choice striker to end the side’s goal drought which has lasted 343 minutes. The Hammers remain a difficult side to break down, they have drawn the last four games in which they have conceded just one goal.

One goal could be enough to take three points from this fixture and West Ham look the better bet to keep a clean sheet.
