Champions League preview – Bayer Leverkusen vs Roma prediction

Bayer Leverkusen manager Roger Schmidt is definitely without Charles Aranguiz and Roberto Hilbert for the visit of Roma. With the likes of Lars Bender, Kevin Kampl, Tin Jedvaj and Omer Toprak also doubtful, Leverkusen’s starting XI may pick itself.

Roma also have a number of injured players coming in to this match, with Francesco Totti, Kevin Strootman, Seydou Keita and Elio Capradossi all out. Rudi Garcia is also waiting on the fitness of striker Edin Dzeko, who is a doubt and may start on the bench.

Possible Line-ups

Bayer Leverkusen: 4-4-2 formation: Leno; Donati, Papadopoulos, Tah, Wendell; Mehmedi, Kampl, Kramer, Calhanoglu; Hernandez, Bellarabi

Roma: 4-3-3 formation: De Sanctis; Florenzi, Rudiger, Manolas, Digne; Nainggolan, De Rossi, Pjanic; Gervinho, Iturbe, Salah

Statistics

  • Bayer Leverkusen have won 3, drawn 2 and lost 5 of their last 10 matches
  • Roma have won 5, drawn 3 and lost 2 of their last 10 matches
  • Over the course of their previous 10 matches, Bayer Leverkusen have scored an average of 1 goal and conceded an average of 1.3 goals per game
  • Over the course of their previous 10 matches, Roma have scored an average of 2.3 goals and conceded an average of 1.4 goals per game
  • There have been over 2.5 goals scored in 5 of Bayer Leverkusen’s previous 10 matches
  • There have been over 2.5 goals scored in 7 of Roma’s previous 10 matches

Prediction

Bayer Leverkusen come in to this game sitting in second place in Group E, with 3 points from their two games played. The first match was a comfortable 4-1 home win over BATE Borisov and in the second, they were unlucky to lose 2-1 at Barcelona, having led until the 80th minute. However, Leverkusen have failed to win any of their last three matches and that will be a bit of a concern heading in to this one.

Roma head to Germany sitting bottom of the group, with just 1 point to show from their opening two games. Having drawn at home 1-1 with defending champions Barcelona, expectations were high heading to Belarus on match-day two but BATE Borisov netted 3 times, in what was a terrible first half performance. Recent victories in Serie A have restored some confidence since then but it’s difficult to predict what Roma are going to produce on the night.

Leverkusen are looking to get back to winning ways but Roma will be determined to head back to Italy with something after their previous Champions League display.
