Champions League preview – Wolfsburg vs PSV Eindhoven prediction

Wolfsburg have Luis Gustavo available once more in the Champions League and he will slot straight back in to the defensive midfield position. Vieirinha made a return to action in the Bundesliga at the weekend and could start but Felipe Lopes and Robin Knoche are likely to miss out.

PSV are without the suspended Santiago Arias, who was sent off in Moscow and therefore Joshua Brenet could play at right-back, with Simon Poulsen at left-back. Striker Luuk de Jong is available having played a part at the weekend but Jetro William and Florian Jozefzoon look set to miss out due to injury.

Possible Line-ups

Wolfsburg: 4-1-4-1 formation: Benaglio; Vieirinha, Naldo, Dante, Rodriguez; Gustavo; Caligiuri, Kruse, Draxler, Schurrle; Dost

PSV: 4-3-3 formation: Zoet; Brenet, Bruma, Moreno, Poulsen; Propper, Hendrix, Guardado; Lestienne, Jong, Narsingh

Prediction

Wolfsburg and PSV come in to this match very much in contention to qualify from the group after two games played. Wolfsburg got their campaign off to a good start with a 1-0 win over CSKA Moscow at home but despite taking the lead at Old Trafford, went down 2-1 to Manchester United. The 4-2 win against Hoffenheim in the Bundesliga was much needed, having failed to win any of their previous four matches, after what was a promising start to the season.

PSV started Group B in style, coming back to beat Manchester United 2-1 before suffering defeat at CSKA Moscow. The defeat in Russia was PSV’s second defeat of the season and they have proved difficult to beat. However, the 1-1 draw at home to Excelsior in the Eredivisie at the weekend was disappointing and far from ideal preparation for this game.

To say PSV do not travel well in Europe is an understatement and their result in Russia last time out only served to emphasise the point. Wolfsburg will be confident of taking the points here and gaining the edge ahead of the return match in Eindhoven.
