Europa League football tips – Liverpool vs Besiktas prediction

Liverpool continued their good form at the weekend, coming back from a goal down in the FA Cup at Crystal Palace to win 2-1 and progress to the quarter-finals. This means, Liverpool have only tasted defeat once in their last 16 matches and seem to be coming good at the right time of the season after a slow start.

Besiktas currently sit top of the Turkish Super Lig table, all be it only 1 point ahead of second placed Fenerbache, who themselves are only 1 point ahead of third placed Galatasary. Besiktas have only lost 1 of their last 8 games, which was a cup match away at Kayserispor.

  • Over the course of their previous 10 matches, Liverpool have scored an average of 1.3 goals and conceded an average of 0.5 goals per game.
  • Over the course of their previous 10 matches, Besiktas have scored an average of 1.8 goals and conceded an average of 1 goal per game.
  • There have been over 2.5 goals scored in 3 of Liverpool’s previous 10 matches
  • There have been over 2.5 goals scored in 6 of Besiktas’ previous 10 matches.
  • The last time the two teams met was in a 2007 Champions League match at Anfield, where Liverpool demolished Besiktas 8-0.

Brendan Rodgers will have been bitterly disappointed to go out of the Champions League at the group stages, recording only 1 win out of their 6 matches. That win came against little known Bulgarian team Ludogorets, a game which Liverpool could easily have lost and they failed when under pressure in the final match against Basel. Rodgers will have to make do without Lazar Markovic, who is suspended and there will be late tests on Lucas Leiva and Raheem Sterling.

Slaven Bilic will once again return to English soil with Besiktas, who progressed from their Europa League group as undefeated winners. Having already played both Arsenal and Tottenham in closely fought away games this season, Bilic and his team will not be fazed by the task ahead of them. A blow for Besiktas will be the loss of first choice goalkeeper Tolga Zengin although Bilic can call upon striker Demba Ba, who will be in for an interesting reception at Anfield.

There is no doubt that Liverpool are in a different place to where they were last time they played a European match at Anfield and confidence is high. That being said, Liverpool’s poor form in Europe can not be ignored and Besiktas will also come in to the match feeling they can get something from the game. It could all come down to the strength of the Liverpool team picked by Rodgers, especially considering the Premier League games that are on the horizon.
