Europa League preview – Liverpool vs Borussia Dortmund prediction.

Liverpool striker Divock Origi came off the bench to score a brace against Stoke on Sunday following an impressive performance in the first leg and could be preferred to Daniel Sturridge. Jordan Henderson has been ruled out with injury which could open the door for Joe Allen in midfield. Jurgen Klopp also has options with Roberto Firmino who is back from injury while Lucas Leiva, Martin Skrtel and Kolo Toure are also pushing for starts.

Dortmund manager Thomas Tuchel may call on influential midfielder Ilkay Gundogan who is available after a spell out with a bruised foot. Versatile Erik Durm is the most likely to make way for the German international. Tuchel has a full squad available with the exception of centre-back Neven Subotic who has missed most of the season with a succession of problems.

Possible Line-ups

Liverpool 4-3-3 formation: Mignolet; Clyne, Lovren, Sakho, Moreno; Allen, Can, Milner; Lallana, Origi, Coutinho

Borussia Dortmund 4-2-3-1 formation: Weidenfeller; Piszczek, Bender, Hummels, Schmelzer; Gundogan, Weigl; Mkhitaryan, Castro, Reus; Aubameyang

Prediction

Liverpool gave themselves every chance of reaching the Europa League semi-finals when holding Dortmund to a 1-1 draw in the first leg. A clean sheet will be enough to qualify but Klopp’s men have not managed a shutout in their last five games. The victory over Stoke at the weekend was their first in five games since defeating Manchester United 2-0 at Anfield in the previous round. Liverpool’s home record is more encouraging as they are undefeated in normal time in their last eight competitive home games.

Dortmund are unbeaten in 18 games since returning from the winter break but will be disappointed to have drawn the last two. They were strong favourites to beat Liverpool at Iduna Park last week and conceded a second-half penalty to allow Schalke a share of the points in a 2-2 draw in Gelsenkirchen on Sunday. Dortmund visited England last month when beating Tottenham 2-1 in the previous round and Tuchel requires a similar performance from his players on Wednesday.

Dortmund rested a number of their stars at the weekend to guarantee their sharpness and shouldn’t be intimidated by the highly-charged atmosphere expected at Anfield.
