Europa League preview – Liverpool vs Sion prediction

Brendan Rodgers will make a number of changes to the Liverpool team which played against Aston Villa for this Europa League game. The likes of Jordan Rossiter, Joe Allen, Kolo Toure and Joe Gomez could all come in to the starting XI.

Sion will probably opt to keep a very similar starting XI to that which defeated Rubin Kazan in their opening Europa League game. Having scored both of the goals in that win, striker Moussa Konate may be asked to operate a lone strikers role as the Swiss team pack the midfield.

Prediction

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers will know, that regardless of the result in this match, it’s the game at Everton on the weekend which needs his attention. Still, a loss in this one will not help his status as manager and having started the Europa League with a point at Bordeaux, will want to cement that with a win here. The 3-2 win over Aston Villa at the weekend was not convincing but will at least bring a bit of confidence to the club.

Sion have lost their last 2 domestic league games and failed to find the back of the net in the process. This is less than ideal preparation for a trip to Anfield but won’t result in the team pushing forward in great numbers looking for goals. Having taken all 3 points form their first home match in the Europa League, Sion may opt to sit back and try and hit Liverpool on the counter-attack.

Although Liverpool may field a team considered to be second-string, there are places up for grabs in the team for the Everton match on Sunday. Sion are not in great form and Liverpool should be able to claim the win.
