La Liga preview – Athletic Bilbao vs Atletico Madrid prediction.

Borja Viguera is set to lead the attack for Athletic Bilbao in the absence of leading scorer Aritz Arduriz and doubts about the fitness of Inaki Williams. Centre-back Sabier Etxeita is in line for a recall to the back four which could allow Mikel San Jose to move into midfield. Right-back Inigo Lekue has been playing a more advanced role on the wing and faces competition from Markel Susaeta. Sabin Merino is unavailable until next month while Aymeric Laporte is out for the season.

Atletico Madrid coach Diego Simeone will make changes to the side that defeated Granada 3-0 on Sunday. Left-back Filipe Luis returns following suspension which means Lucas Hernandez is likely to return to the bench. Gabi will be absent from midfield while he serves a suspension which could see Augusto Fernandez return to the lineup. Jose Gimenez and Thiago are working their way back to full fitness after recovering from injury and will watch from the sidelines.

Prediction

Bilbao responded to the disappointment of being knocked out of the Europa League by defeating Malaga 1-0 at La Rosaleda on Sunday. It was the fifth win in seven league games and keeps Ernesto Valverde’s men on course to qualify for Europe next season. Two of Bilbao’s three home defeats this season came against Barcelona and Real Madrid, leaving the Basque club looking for their first points at home to a top-three side. Atletico have enjoyed a great week, qualifying for the Champions League semi-finals at the expense of Barcelona and going level on points with the Catalans who slipped up against Valencia on Sunday. Atletico have only lost one of the last 11 games in La Liga and have the best away record in the division with 12 wins and 1 draw from 17 games. It’s difficult to resist high-flying Atletico who have scored 11 goals in winning the last three league games.
