La Liga preview – Villarreal vs Valencia prediction

Full back Mario Gaspar is in line for recall to the Villarreal side having been out with a hamstring problem since the end of November. Jaume Costa should be given the go ahead after concerns over his fitness but it’s uncertain if Eric Bailly will be available for selection. Bojan Jokic is also doubtful while Adrian and Daniele Bonera are sidelined with muscular injuries.

Valencia have Javi Fuego and Lucas Oban available after suspension. Fuego has been one of Valencia’s most consistent performers and is expected to drop into the deep lying centre midfield role allowing Dani Parejo to take up an advanced position. Jose Gaya and Rodrigo Moreno are doubtful starters while Sofia Feghouli, Zakaria Bakkali and Enzo Perez miss out as they recover from injury problems.

Prediction

Fifth-placed Villarreal have a strong home record having dropped just four points from 24 at El Madrigal this season. Among the six visitors to leave with nothing were Atletico Madrid and Real Madrid who lost 1-0 on 13 December. Marcelino’s men are unbeaten in the last five games and go into the match on a three-game winning streak.

Valencia have lost momentum lately and not recorded a league win since defeating Celta Vigo 5-1 on 7 November. Aside from the amazing result in Vigo, Valencia have not scored more than one goal while on their travels in La Liga and have lost four of the last six away. They have managed to draw four of the last five games and have a new manager in former England assistant Gary Neville.

Valencia were unable to give the new boss a winning start at home to lowly Getafe and the wait may go on with Villarreal looking worthy favourites.
