Premier League Preview – Newcastle United vs Aston Villa Prediction

Rolando Aarons will be hoping to recover from a foot injury he sustained in training 6 weeks ago, but will probably have to settle for a spot on the bench if he is passed fit, while Massadio Haidara and Tim Krul still face plenty of time on the sidelines for Newcastle. Mike Williamson has returned from his loan spell and could shake off a hamstring complaint in time for this match, with Tioté also hopeful of a recall to the side after recovering from a knock to give Steve McClaren another option in midfield.

Aston Villa have one long-term injury with Jordan Amavi ruled out for the rest of the season with a knee injury, but Remi Garde could have his faltering squad bolstered by up to three players this weekend. José Ángel Crespo will hope to recover from a knock and Micah Richards is expected to resume training after a knee injury, though faces a race against time to prove his fitness along with Gary Gardner.

Possible Line-ups

Newcastle: 4-2-3-1 formation: Elliot, Janmaat, Mbemba, Coloccini, Dummett, Colback, Anita, Sissoko, Wijnaldum, Perez, Mitrovic

Aston Villa: 4-1-4-1 formation: Guzan, Hutton, Okore, Lescott, Bacuna, Sanchez, Sinclair, Veretout, Gueye, Ayew, Gestede

Statistics

  • Aston Villa have failed to win in their last 15 Premier League matches
  • Newcastle are unbeaten in 4 of their last 5 home matches in the Premier League
  • Newcastle have scored 13 and conceded 12 goals at home in the Premier League this season
  • Aston Villa scored 8 and conceded 18 goals on the road in the Premier League this season
  • Newcastle are unbeaten in their last 8 meetings with Aston Villa

Prediction

Newcastle have really raised their game of late to dig themselves out of a hole with against the odds victories over Liverpool and Tottenham, a pair of results that seemed incredibly unlikely given the recent good form of the teams they defeated. Aston Villa’s sorry season has shown no sign of getting any better, with a goalless draw at home to Man City the highlight of their current barren run, that was extended to a fifteenth game with the 0-2 loss at home to Arsenal last weekend.

All of the stats point to a home win here and Steve McClaren’s men will be buoyed by recent successes, so should get the job done if maintaining their performance levels. Remi Garde will look to make it a battle though and it’s interesting that Aston Villa’s last 5 defeats to Newcastle have been by a 1 goal margin, so it could be a closely fought contest.
