Premier League preview – Chelsea vs Aston Villa prediction

Many Chelsea fans have been calling for Branislav Ivanovic to be dropped from the team and due to injury, they will get their wish. Therefore, either summer signing Baba Rahman or central defender Kurt Zouma will fill in at right-back. Striker Diego Costa is available and will go straight back in to Chelsea’s attack.

Aston Villa manager Tim Sherwood is still waiting on the fitness of Jores Okore, Ciaran Clark, Adama Traore, Gabriel Agbonlahor and Gary Gardner. However, the likes of Jack Grealish and Carles Gil could come back in to the starting XI, having missed out last time.

Possible Line-ups

Chelsea: 4-2-3-1 formation: Begovic; Rahman, Cahill, Terry, Azpilicueta; Fabregas, Matic; Pedro, Willian, Hazard; Costa

Aston Villa: 4-3-3 formation: Guzan; Hutton, Richards, Lescott, Amavi; Westwood, Veretout, Gueye; Grealish, Gestede, Ayew

Statistics

  • Chelsea have won 4, drawn 1 and lost 5 of their last 10 matches
  • Aston Villa have won 2, drawn 2 and lost 6 of their last 10 matches
  • Over the course of their previous 10 matches, Chelsea have scored an average of 1.9 goals and conceded an average of 1.8 goals per game
  • Over the course of their previous 10 matches, Aston Villa have scored an average of 1.2 goals and conceded an average of 1.6 goals per game
  • There have been over 2.5 goals scored in 9 of Chelsea’s previous 10 matches
  • There have been over 2.5 goals scored in 5 of Aston Villa’s previous 10 matches

Prediction

The managers of both teams, enter this match with huge pressure on their shoulders and in real need of a win. Chelsea are without a win in 3 games and during that time the team have conceded 7 goals. In the Premier League, Chelsea have conceded 17 goals in 8 games, only Sunderland have a worse defensive record. Home league form has been poor, winning 1, drawing 1 and losing 2 of their 4 games to date.

If Chelsea are having a poor season, then it’s been a disasterous one so far for Aston Villa. Just 1 win from 8 games and 6 defeats, leaves Aston Villa in the relegation zone. The match against Stoke, before the international break, was an important one and they went down 1-0 at home, not a good way to end the first part of the season. Despite starting the season with an away win at Bournemouth, recent away league form has not been good, losing the last 3 and conceding 8 goals in the process.

Neither manager can afford another defeat here but with both teams low on confidence, the better quality players are with the home team and with Diego Costa back, Chelsea should scrape through.
