Premier League preview – Manchester City vs Newcastle United prediction

City are still without defensive duo Eliaquim Mangala and Gael Clichy while Fabian Delph, Wilfred Bony and Kelechi Iheanacho make up the rest of the long term injury list. Vincent Kompany is also likely to remain sidelined and Fernando is tipped to deputise in midfield for Yaya Toure who picked up a knock in the Champions League.

Newcastle are expected to stick with the 4-4-2 formation that earnt them a draw with Chelsea last week, and Steve McClaren will likely pick a similar eleven. Papiss Cisse, Steven Taylor, Emannuel Riviere and Cheik Tiote are all injured and Massando Haidara is a doubt to return at left-back.

Possible Line-ups

Manchester City:  4-2-3-1 formation:  Hart; Sagna, Demichelis, Otamendi, Kolarov; Fernando, Fernandinho; De Bruyne, Silva, Sterling; Aguero

Newcastle United:  4-4-2 formation:  Krul; Janmaat, Coloccini, Mbembo, Mbabu; Sissoko, Colback, Anita, Wijnaldum; Mitrovic; Perez

Statistics

  • City have won 7, drawn 0 and lost 3 of their last 10 matches
  • Newcastle have won 1, drawn 3 and lost 6 of their last 10 matches
  • Over the course of their previous 10 matches, City have scored an average of 2 goals and conceded an average of 1 goals per game
  • Over the course of their previous 10 matches, Newcastle have scored an average of 0.9 goals and conceded an average of 1.4 goals per game
  • There have been over 2.5 goals scored in 7 of City’s previous 10 matches
  • There have been over 2.5 goals scored in 4 of Newcastle’s previous 10 matches
  • Newcastle are yet to win a game this season

Prediction

After an electric start to the season City have lost last two of their last three league games but, with a 2-1 victory over Borrussia Monchengladbach on Wednesday, Manuel Pelegrini’s side will go into the Saturday’s clash on a high.

It will be a difficult job for Newcastle to contain City’s in form midfield, in particular Kevin De Bruyne has made a bright start to his career in Manchester with three goals in his first three starts. However his side’s back four have been struggling without the leadership of Kompany having failed to keep a clean sheet in five games.

That is a statistic which will encourage a Newcastle team that has only scored five premier league goals in seven games and is in desperate need of  a first win of the season.
