Premier League preview – Newcastle vs Manchester United prediction.

Newcastle manager Steve McClaren will scrap the experimental 3-5-2 formation which failed to produce a positive outcome in the FA Cup third round tie at Watford on Saturday. Swiss defender Kevin Mbabu is expected to make way for a midfielder where Jack Colback who has nursing a knee injury could be risked ahead of Siem De Jong. Aleksandar Mitrovic will continue to spearhead the attack in the absence of Papiss Cisse who is still recovering from a groin injury.

Manchester United midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger will be assessed after picking up a knock in the FA Cup victory against Sheffield United on Saturday. Manager Luis Van Gaal has options with Morgan Schneiderlin who is ready for a recall and Jesse Lingard who came on as a substitute on Saturday after a lengthy lay off.

Possible Line-ups

Newcastle: 4-4-2 formation: Elliot; Janmaat, Mbemba, Coloccini, Dummett; Sissoko, Tiote, Colback, Wijnaldum; Perez, Mitrovic

Manchester United: 4-2-3-1 formation: De Gea; Darmian, Smalling, Blind, Young; Carrick, Fellaini; Mata, Herrera, Martial; Rooney

Statistics

  • Newcastle have won 3 drawn 1 and lost 6 of their last 10 matches
  • Manchester United have won 2 drawn 4 and lost 4 of their last 10 matches
  • Over the course of their previous 10 matches, Newcastle have scored an average of 0.7 goals and conceded an average of 1.4 goals per game
  • Over the course of their previous 10 matches, Manchester United have scored an average of 0.8 goals and conceded an average of 1.1 goals per game
  • There have been over 2.5 goals scored in 3 of Newcastle’s previous 10 matches
  • There have been over 2.5 goals scored in 4 of Manchester United’s previous 10 matches

Prediction

The pressure is mounting on Steve McClaren despite his claims Newcastle are heading in the right direction. They have lost the last four games and failed to score in each. The Magpies have won twice at home this season. They beat Liverpool 2-0 at St James’ Park last month but the two most recent home games resulted in a 1-1- draw against bottom of the league Aston Villa and a 1-0 defeat to Everton.

Luis van Gaal is another manager facing criticism from fans and pundits. The Red Devils ended a run of seven games without a win when defeating Swansea 2-1 a week past Saturday and the last minute victory in the FA Cup at the weekend means United go to Tyneside on the back of two consecutive victories.

Given the lack of creativity from both teams this could easily end in a stalemate similar to their 0-0 draw at Old Trafford in August.
