Premier League preview – Newcastle vs Everton prediction

Pappis Cisse is the latest in a long line of injured players at Newcastle. The Senegal striker was withdrawn after 33 minutes of the 1-1 draw against Aston Villa and Serbian target man Aleksandr Mitrovic is available to deputise if Cisse does not recover in time to face Everton. Defenders Mike Williamson and Jamal Lascelles could be in line for a recall having overcome their hamstring problems and 20-year-old midfielder Rolando Aarons will soon be staking his claim as he is due to return from ankle injury. Manager Steve McClaren will monitor the progress of Emmanuel Riviere over the next few weeks to determine if the French striker requires an operation on his knee injury.

Everton boss Roberto Martinez will be without the option of Steven Naismith as the Scottish international serves a one-match ban for receiving five yellow cards. Hopes of a Boxing Day return for influential midfielder James McCarthy have been dashed as the 25-year-old struggles with a hip problem and centre back Phil Jagielka may have to put back his scheduled return from knee ligament damage until the New Year. Steven Pienaar, Brian Oviedo and Tyias Browning are still some way off a return from their injury issues.

Prediction

Newcastle have taken some heavy defeats this season and looked to be in free fall until surprising pundits by registering successive victories against in-form Liverpool (2-0) and Tottenham (2-1) this month. The match against bottom dwellers Aston Villa at St James Park on Saturday started off brightly before the Magpies were left holding on for the eventual 1-1 draw and they go into this match unbeaten in the last three games.

Everton’s eight-game unbeaten run came to an end when league leaders Leicester City won by the odd goal in five at Goodison Park on Saturday. Striker Romelu Lukaku kept up his impressive record by scoring in his eighth consecutive game and taking his tally to 13 goals in 17 league games this season. The Toffees have only been beaten once away from home in the league this season (2-1 at Arsenal) but have been guilty of giving away winning positions at Bournemouth (3-3) and Norwich (1-1) on their most recent road trips.

Newcastle showed confidence remains frail when put under pressure by struggling Aston Villa last weekend. Everton have scored in each of their last five away games and can make this the third win in four visits to Tyneside.
