Southampton meet Everton in a televised Premier League match this Sunday. Read the match predictions to find out why a draw is the betting tip at St Mary’s. Saints lost 1-0 away to Sparta Prague in the Europa League on Thursday night while the Toffees have a few extra days rest after drawing 1-1 at home to Swansea last weekend.
Southampton vs Everton Preview
Southampton have had to make do without Dusan Tadic for the last couple of games and he’ll be hoping to recover from a broken nose here. Sofiane Boufal may get a start on the left flank in his absence while there are question marks over the fitness of Pierre-Emile Højbjerg and Jose Fonte. Nathan Redmond should continue on the right, with Charlie Austin leading the line for the hosts.
Everton welcomed back Leighton Baines in the draw against Swansea and the left-back should retain his starting berth having come through unscathed. Gareth Barry returns from suspension and should take the place of James McCarthy in midfield. Muhamed Besic remains sidelined through injury and Arouna Koné is doubtful, leaving first-choice striker Romelu Lukaku to spearhead the attack.

Southampton vs Everton Prediction
Southampton come into this game 5 points behind Everton and will need to pick themselves up after losing in the Europa League through the week. Prior to that match, Saints managed to keep a clean sheet and hold Liverpool to a 0-0 draw but there overall form has been poor of late.
Everton were expected to coast past Swansea, so failing to win was a bit of a surprise. The Toffees lost their previous away game 5-0 at Chelsea, so it’s fair to say Ronald Koeman needs a result against his old side.
There have been under 2.5 goals scored in 5 of Southampton’s last 6 home games in the Premier League, so this could be a tense and cagey affair. Saints have only lost once in their last 11 league games at St Mary’s and are expected to make life tough for the visitors. However, Everton have only failed to score once in 6 games and Southampton haven’t been keeping many clean sheets.

Southampton manager Ronald Koeman, will have to wait for a further 2 to 3 weeks, before summer signing Jordy Clasie, is available for selection. Ryan Bertrand is making progress but remains doubtful and Steven Caulker is out with a sinus infection.
Roberto Martinez, still has a number of injuries to deal with in his Everton squad. Leighton Baines will be out for some time and joins Aiden McGeady, Darron Gibson, Tony Hibbert and Steven Pienaar on the sidelines. The good news is, both Muhamed Besic and Gerard Deulofeu could be available.

- Over the course of their previous 10 matches, Southampton have scored an average of 2.8 goals and conceded an average of 1.1 goals per game
- Over the course of their previous 10 matches, Everton have scored an average of 1.5 goals and conceded an average of 1.2 goals per game

- There have been over 2.5 goals scored in 6 of Everton’s previous 10 matches
- Southampton are undefeated at home against Everton in their previous 6 matches
Having both drawn their opening games 2-2, there were aspects both teams will be looking to improve on in this match. However, having made the trip to Newcastle, Southampton will be the happier of the two teams going in to this match. That being said, neither team can afford to drop more points, if they want to keep ground with those at the top end of the Premier League table.
Southampton will be hoping to match their performance against Everton from last season, where they triumphed 3-0 at St Mary’s and this has the makings of an attacking, exciting game of football. Martinez knows, that if Everton come away from this match with nothing, early season pressure will start to build, with games against Manchester City, Spurs and Chelsea to come.
Both teams looked less than convincing at the back last week and there could be a few goals but Southampton have the edge.
