Premier League preview – Tottenham vs Chelsea prediction

Tottenham will be boosted by the return of Eric Lamella who has sat out the last two games with a groin strain. Mauricio Pochettino is forced into changes from the side that won convincingly against West Ham last Sunday after Dele Alli received his fifth yellow card. The 19-year-old’s suspension means Heung-Min Son could get to keep his place in the starting eleven. Midfielder Nabil Bentaleb is also available for selection having recovered from a knock while on international duty with Algeria but the 21-year-old may have to wait for another chance to start.

Chelsea kingpin John Terry faces a race to prove his fitness after picking up a knock in the Champions League victory at Maccabi Tel-Aviv on Tuesday. Ramires missed the trip to Israel in midweek and will be assessed before the matchday squad is finalised.  Radamael Falcao will give Jose Mourinho options up front as the Colombian is expected to be given the all clear on a muscle injury which kept him sidelined for last three weeks. Asmir Begovic will keep the gloves with rumours suggesting first choice goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois will be out until December with a knee injury.

Possible Line-ups

Tottenham: 4-2-3-1 formation: Lloris; Walker, Alderweirald, Vertonghen, Rose; Dier, Dembele; Lamella, Heung-Min, Eriksen; Kane

Chelsea: 4-2-3-1 formation: Begovic; Ivanovic, Terry, Cahill, Azpilicueta; Fabregas, Matic; Willian, Hazard, Pedro; Costa

Prediction

Tottenham won this fixture 5-3 last season and while a repeat of the high-scoring thriller is unlikely on Sunday, the White Hart Lane faithful will believe their team is capable of defeating Chelsea for the second time in 13 games. Tottenham are unbeaten since losing 1-0 at Old Trafford on the opening day of the season and inflicted an embarrassing 4-1 defeat over last season’s runners up Manchester City in September.

Fortunes may be changing for Chelsea who have won three of the last four games. Two of those successes came in the Champions League and it is time to produce similar results in the Premier League if they hope to clinch a  top four spot this term. Much will depend on Diego Costa finding his form in front of goal as Mourinho has little in the way of alternatives for Spanish striker.

Chelsea’s defence has been much better organised since being breached three times by Liverpool last month and could hold off Tottenham’s threat to earn a draw.
