Premier League preview – Tottenham vs West Ham prediction

Heung-Kin Son should get his first start for Tottenham since 26 September replacing suspended Erik Lamela in midfield.  Decisions on the fitness of Clinton N’Jie and Mousa Dembele will be made closer to kick off with the latter most likely to feature. Nacer Chadli and Alex Pritchard remain on the recovery trail and won’t figure in Mauricio Pochettino’s plans for the next few weeks.

West Ham have problems in attack with Enner Valencia sidelined through injury and concerns that fellow striker Diafro Sakho may not be fit in time for Sunday. Playmaker Dimitri Payet  is out with an ankle injury and Mauro Zarate is expected to come into the starting XI as his replacement. It appears unlikely Alex Song will be ready while Pedro Obiang is also doubtful. James Tomkins is set to partner Winston Reid in the centre of defence with James Collins suspended.

Possible Line-ups

Tottenham: 4-2-3-1 formation: Lloris; Walker, Alderweireld, Vertonghen, Rose; Alli, Dier; Eriksen, Dembele, Heung-Min; Kane

West Ham: 4-3-2-1 formation: Adrian; Jenkinson, Tomkins, Reid, Cresswell; Kouyate, Noble; Zarate, Lanzini, Moses; Carroll

  • Over the course of their previous 10 matches, Tottenham have scored an average of 2 goals and conceded an average of 1.2 goals per game
  • Over the course of their previous 10 matches, West Ham have scored an average of 1.8 goals and conceded an average of 1.1 goals per game
  • There have been over 2.5 goals scored in 7 of Tottenham’s previous 10 matches
  • There have been over 2.5 goals scored in 6 of West Ham’s previous 10 matches

Prediction

Tottenham’s 1-1 draw at Arsenal last time extended the club’s unbeaten run in the league to eleven games and confidence within the camp will be further boosted by the lauded displays of Alli, Dier and Kane in England’s victory over France on Tuesday. Pochettino’s side is looking for back-to-back homes wins for the second time this season after beating Aston Villa 3-1 earlier this month. Previously, Tottenham had recorded wins against Crystal Palace (1-0) and Manchester City (4-1) before Liverpool denied a treble in a 0-0 draw in October.

West Ham suffered their first away defeat of the season against Watford at the end of October when undone by goals from Odion Ighalo either side of half-time. The Hammers face another in-form striker in Harry Kane who has scored in each of Tottenham’s last four games. Reports suggest West Ham manager Slaven Bilic expects a defensive performance despite having beaten Arsenal, Liverpool and Manchester City away from home this season.

Tottenham have struggled to beat their London neighbours in recent times, losing 4 and drawn 1 of the last five meetings. However the Hammers will miss the creativity of Payet and a cutting edge up front leaving the home side to come out on top in a potentially low-scoring game.
