When the Wimbledon draw was made, this was the match that everyone was hoping and waiting for, Roger Federer vs Andy Murray. What a tremendous match this promises to be.
Federer is the number two seed and has lived up the billing through the tournament to date. The seven time Wimbledon champion did not allow the rain breaks to put him off, as he defeated Gilles Simon in straight sets in the quarter-finals. The match witnessed the first time that Federer has lost a service game at Wimbledon this year but with his own serve so good, winning at least 79% of first serve points throughout the tournament, he was untroubled.
Federer will look towards his recent meetings with Murray, having defeated the Scot in their last three matches.
Murray also sealed a straight sets win in his quarter-final, against Vasek Pospisil. During the match, the number three seed won 84% of his first serve points and also performed well at the net. However, Murray will be disappointed with his return game and has now averaged only 32.7% of return points over the course of his last two matches. Considering the way Federer has been serving, this will have to improve if Murray is to progress to the final.
Despite losing his last three matches to Federer, the overall head-to-head between the two is only slightly in Federer’s favour and currently stands at 12-11.
The second semi-final will be contested between Novak Djokovic and Richard Gasquet. Following a very tough match against Kevin Anderson in the fourth round, normal service was resumed for Djokovic, as he defeated Marin Cilic in straight sets in the quarter-finals. The world number one was at his consistent best, committing only 12 unforced errors in the match and averaging just under 16 per match for the tournament.
Djokovic has won each of the last nine matches against Gasquet, including a comfortable straight sets win in the French Open this year.
Gasquet came through a fantastic match against French Open champion Stan Wawrinka in the quarter-finals, winning the fifth set 11-9. Similarly to Djokovic, the Frenchman has been very consistent in his play throughout the tournament, averaging just over 17 unforced errors per match. However, Gasquet has managed to take just three sets off Djokovic in their 13 meetings to date and therefore, it seems unlikely he will double that total in this match.
