Europa League preview – Fenerbahce vs Ajax prediction

Fenerbahce manager Vitor Pereira is definitely without midfielder Volkan Sen and also has doubts over winger Nani and defender Bruno Alves. Considering his current form and rumoured interest from Barcelona, it will be interested to see if Pereira selects Robin van Persie or opts for Fernandao up-front.

Ajax have concerns over their first choice goalkeeper Jesper Cillessen, having come back from international duty with an injury and therefore, Diederik Boer may continue in goal. Frank de Boer is also without Polish striker Arkadiusz Milik, who was also injured while playing for his country.

Possible Line-ups

Fenerbahce: 4-3-3 formation: Demirel; Ozbayrakli, Kjaer, Kadlec, Erkin; Tufan, Topal, Meireles; Diego, van Persie, Markovic

Ajax: 4-3-3 formation: Boer; Tete, Veltman, Riedewald, Dijks; Klassen, Gudelj, Bazoer; Schone, Ghazi, Fischer

Statistics

  • Fenerbahce have won 5, drawn 3 and lost 2 of their last 10 matches
  • Ajax have won 5, drawn 4 and lost 1 of their last 10 matches
  • Over the course of their previous 10 matches, Fenerbahce have scored an average of 1.7 goals and conceded an average of 1.3 goals per game
  • Over the course of their previous 10 matches, Ajax have scored an average of 1.8 goals and conceded an average of 0.7 goals per game
  • There have been over 2.5 goals scored in 7 of Fenerbahce’s previous 10 matches
  • There have been over 2.5 goals scored in 4 of Ajax’s previous 10 matches

Prediction

Fenerbahce have it all to do in Europa League Group A, as they currently sit bottom with just a single point to their name. The draw came at Celtic Park and was a good point considering they were 2-0 down but the real disappointment was the 3-1 defeat at home to Molde. Fenerbahce are doing OK in the Turkish Super Lig, sitting third in the table but their performances in the European competition this season have not been good.

Ajax sit top of the Eredivisie table, thanks to a better goal difference than Feyenoord but come in to this Europa League match third in Group A. Two unconvincing draws, against Celtic and Molde, leave Ajax on 2 points but at least they came back from losing positions in both of those matches to claim something. Goal scoring has not been a problem for Ajax this season, netting at least once in all but one of their last 16 matches.

Ajax will fancy their chances of breaching the Fenerbahce defence but keeping the home side out at the end could prove to be a different matter, in what could be an entertaining game.
