La Liga preview – Getafe vs Atletico Madrid prediction.

The return of Juan Cala from suspension will mean right-back Carlos Vigaray will go back to the bench after being asked to play a central role for Getafe last weekend. Coach Fran Escriba will be forced to make a change in midfield as Mehdi Lacen must serve a one-match ban for picking up his fifth yellow of the season. Alvaro Vazquez substituted for Lacen as Getafe chased the game against Malaga but Alvaran Madran looks a more obvious choice to start against Atletico. Pablo Sarabia has returned to training but remains a doubt for Sunday, as does Roberto Lago who is taking it day to day with a rib injury.

Filipe Luis has had his suspension reduced to one game and is likely to return at the expense of 19-year-old full back Lucas Hernandez who made his first appearance of the season in Atletico’s 3-1 win against Eibar on Saturday. Central defenders Diego Godin and Stefan Savic worked out with the first team in midweek and Diego Simeone will be hopeful he can call on one of the pair to allow Saul to resume his place in midfield. Thomas Partey is doubtful after missing training with a thigh injury while Tiago Mendez and Augustus Fernandez remain sidelined.

Possible Line-ups

Getafe 4-2-3-1 formation: Guaita; Suarez, Vergin, Velazquez, Vigaray; J Rodriguez, Medran; Gomez, V Rodriguez, Leon; Scepovic

Atletico Madrid 4-4-2 formation: Oblak; Gamez, Gimenez, Godin, Luis; Saul, Gabi, Koke, Carrasco; Griezmann, Correa

  • Over the course of their previous 10 matches, Atletico Madrid have scored an average of 1.6 goals and conceded an average of 0.7 goals per game
  • There have been over 2.5 goals scored in 6 of Getafe’s previous 10 matches
  • There have been over 2.5 goals scored in 5 of Atletico Madrid’s previous 10 matches

Prediction

Getafe made good progress in their bid to avoid the drop when putting together a run of six games unbeaten from mid-December but are now looking over their shoulder after three consecutive defeats.  The impending visit of their Madrid neighbours will do little to settle nerves at the Coliseum as Getafe have failed to score against Atletico in their previous 10 meetings. The 1-0 defeat to Athletic Club on 30 January was only the third loss at home this season but the 3-0 defeat at Malaga last weekend was not ideal preparation for Sunday’s derby match.

Atletico players had their minds on the top-of-the-table clash with Barcelona when knocked out of the Copa del Rey by Celta Vigo last month. Simeone’s side was reduced to 9 men in the 2-1 defeat by La Liga champions in Camp Nou leaving one or two of the side exhausted, particularly Savic who had to be rested last week. Atletico responded well with a makeshift set up to beat Eibar last week and will be stronger for this weekend’s encounter. Prior to the Barcelona defeat, Atletico had conceded one goal in the previous 6 away games.

Atletico should be back their usual lineup which should provide the usual result against Getafe
