La Liga preview – Las Palmas vs Athletic Bilbao prediction.

Competition for places is keen as Quique Setien uses the remaining games to assess the Las Palmas squad ahead of the transfer window. Centre back Mauricio Lemos is back in training and looking to impress. Full-back David Simon and midfielder Angel Montoro are hoping to shake off knocks while winger Nabil El Zhar has been laid low with a stomach bug. Javi Castellano is the only player certainly ruled out as he hasn’t featured since the first month of the season.

The Athletic Bilbao treatment table has been busy this week with the likes of Benat Etxebarria, Xabier Etxeita, Oscar De Marcos and Aritz Aduriz who should all be passed fit for the weekend. However, Ernesto Valverde may take the opportunity give one or two of his squad a chance to shine. Winger Inaki Williams and full-back Inigo Lekue are two younger members of the squad with a lot to offer while centre-forward Borja Viguera has had few opportunities to prove himself this season.

Las Palmas vs Athletic Bilbao Prediction

Las Palmas sealed their place in La Liga next season when defeating Espanyol 4-0 here on 22 April. It followed a nervy week in which they drew 1-1 at home to Gijon and lost 1-0 at Real Betis. Setien made a number of changes for the trip to Granada last weekend when his side surrendered a two-goal lead to lose 3-2. Las Palmas have won two and drawn one of the last three at home where they have only won two of their games against teams currently above them in La Liga. Bilbao will guarantee finishing fifth if they can win their eighth away game in La Liga this term. Valverde’s men could only manage a 2-2 draw at Levante on their last road trip but had won four of the previous six away games in La Liga. Bilbao have only lost one of the last six league games (1-0 v Atletico Madrid) and go into Sunday’s match on the back of a 2-1 home victory over Celta Vigo. Las Palmas strung together a great run of results from late February to secure their stay in La Liga but Bilbao will provide their sternest test since losing at home to Real Madrid in March.
