Southampton v FC Midtjylland Prediction and Football Tips – 20/08/15
Europa League – Southampton v FC Midtjylland Prediction
Southampton are expected to line up with a strong starting eleven after manager Ronald Koeman indicated that he would not be looking to the weekend when choosing his team for this European tie. James Ward-Prowse is expected to return to the starting line up, while Steven Caulker is also available again. Koeman may also hand a Southampton debut to former Chelsea and Barcelona midfielder, Oriol Romeu. Saido Mane may miss out having been surprisingly linked with a switch to Old Trafford this transfer window.
FC Midtjylland are likely to go with the team that drew 0-0 with FC Copenhagen this past weekend, the only change being the reintroduction to the starting line up of Morten Rasmussen. The Danish international had a spell at Celtic earlier in his career although he only made a meagre four starts under Neil Lennon. He will operate as a lone front man, the Danish outfit looking to pack the midfield and utilise an anchorman in front of the back four.
Southampton: 4-2-3-1 Formation: Stekelenburg; Soares, Caulker, Fonte, Targett; Davis, Romeu, Long, Ward-Prowse, Rodriguez; Pelle
FC Midtjylland: 3-5-2 Formation: Dahlin; Hansen, Sviatchenko, Lauridsen; Romer, Poulsen, Sparv, Royer, Olsson; Rasmussen, Sisto

- There have been over 2.5 goals scored in 7 of Midtjylland’s previous 10 matches.

Southampton have started the Premier League poorly, sitting 17th in the league table. A decent 2-2 result at St. James’ Park was followed by a crushing 3-0 home defeat at the hands of Everton. Europe has been a different story however; a 5-0 aggregate win over Vitesse in the last round has indicated that Ronald Koeman intends to take Europe’s secondary club competition seriously this season. Southampton have won over half of their home European ties and will look to continue that impressive statistic. Expect them to chase goals.
FC Midtjylland are the Danish champions, they sit atop of the Superliga and currently possess four wins out of their first five league games. Domestically, they are impressive but the feats of the Danish champions on their European escapades leave much to be desired. They have failed to get past the qualifying rounds of this competition on their three previous attempts and were defeated 3-1 on aggregate by Cyprus’ APOEL in their attempt to make the Champion League proper. They have met an English team once previously; Manchester City defeated them on penalties after a 1-1 aggregate result in 2008.
If Southampton line up with a strong eleven as they have indicated then this should be a no contest. There will be a lot of men taking to the field in red and white with a point to prove. The likes of Long, Rodriguez and Pelle will be hungry for continental goals. Not conceding will make the trip to Denmark so much easier.
