Bundesliga preview – SV Darmstadt 98 v Wolfsburg prediction

Darmstadt have Junior Diaz playing left back with Fabian Holland having to settle for a spot on the bench. Peter Niemeyer has fully recovered from a thigh injury which is a massive boost for Darmstadt. Marco Sailer may start at Number 10 although Jan Rosenthal has played there in recent weeks when the team have done well and Wagner should once again lead the line.

Wolfsburg have Vierinha returning to the match day squad but unlikely to start the game so Christian Trasch keeps his right back spot. Maximilian Arnold is unlikely to return to the line up to partner Luis Gustavo in midfield, so will be on the bench. Again Dieter Hecking will have Andre Schurrle and Nicklas Bendtner available if he decides to rest players ahead of the Champions League.

Possible Line-ups

Darmstadt: 4-4-1-1 formation: Mathenia; Garics, Sulu, Caldirola, Diaz; Heller, Niemeyer, Gondorf, Rausch; Rosenthal; Wagner

Wolfsburg: 4-2-3-1 formation: Benaglio; Trasch, Naldo, Dante, Rodriguez; Guilavogui, Gustavo; Caligiuri, Kruse, Draxler; Dost

  • Wolfsburg have scored an average of 1.5 goals and conceded an average of 1.2 goals per game

Prediction

Darmstadt sit 9th in the Bundesliga and continue to find ways of earning points in games. An impressive 2-0 away win at Augsburg last weekend will galvanise the team, currently unbeaten away from home in the league. Marcel Heller and Sandro Wagner provide a real goal threat with 7 goals between them, so although Darmstadt have struggled against the bigger teams it will not be an easy trip for Wolfsburg.

Wolfsburg currently sit in 5th place but are 4 points off a Champions League spot. A 4-2 win in their last home league game against Hoffenheim followed by a 2-0 Champions League victory over PSV mid week could mean that Wolfsburg have put their rocky patch behind them and are now ready to get back in the mix at the top of the table.

After their midweek display against an expansive PSV we have gone for a Wolfsburg win here, with Bas Dost to dominate the Darmstadt defence and bag more than one. We are not ruling out a Darmstadt goal though, especially at home.
