Champions League preview – PSV Eindhoven vs Atletico Madrid prediction.

PSV top scorer Luuk de Jong is suspended for the visit of Atletico and with attacking left winger Maxime Lestienne sidelined with injury, coach Phillip Cocu will shuffle the front three. Luciano Narsingh will come in and play on the wing with Jurgen Locadia moving into the middle. Andres Guardado is injured which means Chelsea loanee Marco van Ginkel should make his second Champions League appearance in almost two-and-a-half years. Cocu must decide on the left back berth after Jetro Willems returned from a long-term injury to star in the 2-0 victory over Heracles on Saturday, Joshua Brenet has been deputising for the highly-rated defender.

Jose Gimenez was suspended for Atletico Madrid’s game against Villarreal on Sunday but is expected to return to the back four with Stefan Savic dropping to the bench. Fernando Torres returned to action at the weekend after a spell out with injury and should keep his place at the expense of Luciano Vietto. Atletico have four players sidelined for the trip to Eindhoven in Tiago, Augusto Fernandez, Thomas Partey and Yannick Carrasco.

Prediction

PSV won all three home games on their way to qualifying as runners-up in Champions League Group B with ten points. The Eredivisie champions edged out Manchester United thanks to a draw at Old Trafford which effectively sealed a place in the knockout stage along with Wolfsburg – CSKA Moscow picked up the wooden spoon. PSV lead the way in their domestic league on the strength of a home record that reads 9 wins and 2 draws in 11 games.

Atletico suffered an upset in their first home game of this Champions League campaign when defeated by eventual Group C runners-up Benfica. Diego Simeone’s men recovered to win the group with 13 points and were unbeaten away with 2 wins (Galatasaray and Benfica) and 1 draw (Astana). Atletico are second in La Liga and the 2-1 defeat against Barcelona in Camp Nou is the only loss in the last 9 league games.

Atletico have only conceded in two of their last seven competitive away games and could just edge what should be a very tight affair
