League Cup preview – Manchester City vs Everton prediction.

Manuel Pellegrini tried playing 4-4-2 when Manchester City entertained Everton in the league two weeks ago and is expected to revert to the usual 4-2-3-1 to find the goals necessary to overcome the 2-1 first leg deficit. Sergio Aguero scored a second successive brace on Saturday and is expected to start ahead of Kelechi Iheanacho with Wilfried Bony absent through injury. Pellegrini is without Vincent Kompany, Eliaquim Mangala and Aleksandar Kolarov leaving few options to rotate players.

Everton midfielders Kevin Mirallas and Muhamed Besic look set to miss out after picking up injuries in the 2-1 defeat against Swansea on Sunday. James McCarthy is doubtful as he recovers from groin strain but Steven Pienaar comes into contention for his first start of the season having made three substitute appearances since returning from a long layoff.

Possible Line-ups

Manchester City: 4-2-3-1 formation: Cabellero; Sagna, Demichelis, Otamendi, Clichy; Delph, Toure; de Bruyne, Silva, Navas; Aguero

Everton: 4-2-3-1 formation: Robles; Coleman, Stones, Mori, Baines; Cleverley, Barry; Delofeu, Barkley, Pienaar, Lukaku

Statistics

  • Manchester City have won 5 drawn 3 and lost 2 of their last 10 matches
  • Everton have won 3 drawn 4 and lost 3 of their last 10 matches
  • Over the course of their previous 10 matches, Manchester City have scored an average of 1.9 goals and conceded an average of 0.9 goals per game
  • Over the course of their previous 10 matches, Everton have scored an average of 1.6 goals and conceded an average of 1.5 goals per game
  • There have been over 2.5 goals scored in 8 of Manchester City’s previous 10 matches
  • There have been over 2.5 goals scored in 5 of Everton’s previous 10 matches

Prediction

Manchester City’s only defeat in the last eight games came in the first leg when losing 2-1 at Goodison Park. Pellegrini’s men have won six of the last seven at Etihad Stadium, the 0-0 draw against Everton spoiling a perfect seven. City scored 21 times in that seven-game home run and need to score at least twice on Wednesday to avoid extra time or going out of the competition.

Everton suffered a disappointing 2-1 defeat at home to Swansea on Sunday but will take heart from the one-goal advantage they take to Manchester. Roberto Martinez’ side has shown plenty of spirit on its travels and are undefeated in the last seven away games. Five of those results were draws and a similar outcome will have Toffees’ fans rushing to book their seats for Wembley.

Manchester City don’t always get what they deserve from dominant performances but that could change with Aguero back on song.
