Europa League preview – Anderlecht vs Tottenham prediction

Anderlecht manager Besnik Hasi will be tempted to stick with the same starting XI which did well in the Belgian league at the weekend. That could mean a 4-4-2 formation, with Stefano Okaka and Imoh Ezekiel leading the line, with support coming from the wide positions.

Tottenham are without Nacer Chadli due to an ankle ligament injury and with Heung-min Son also a doubt, Andros Townsend could be in line to start the game. However, Clinton N’Jie looked a threat when he came on against Liverpool at the weekend and will be hoping to break in to the first XI for this one.

Possible Line-ups

Anderlecht: 4-4-2 formation: Proto; Najar, Mbodji, Deschacht, Obradovic; Gillet, Dendoncker, Defour; Praet; Okaka, Ezekiel

Tottenham: 4-2-3-1 formation: Lloris; Trippier, Alderwiereld, Vertonghen, Rose; Dier, Alli; Eriksen, Lamela, Townsend; Kane

Statistics

  • Anderlecht have won 5, drawn 4 and lost 1 of their last 10 matches
  • Tottenham have won 4, drawn 5 and lost 1 of their last 10 matches
  • Over the course of their previous 10 matches, Anderlecht have scored an average of 1.5 goals and conceded an average of 0.5 goals per game
  • Over the course of their previous 10 matches, Tottenham have scored an average of 1.4 goals and conceded an average of 0.8 goals per game
  • There have been over 2.5 goals scored in 3 of Anderlecht’s previous 10 matches
  • There have been over 2.5 goals scored in 4 of Tottenham’s previous 10 matches

Prediction

Domestic form is good for Anderlecht, they currently sit third in Belgium Pro League and have lost only one game domestically all season. However, form in European competition is not so good, having been held at home 1-1 by Monaco and then losing 1-0 at Qarabag in Europa League Group J. Anderlecht are now without a win in five European games and will need to change that run of poor form quickly, if they are to progress from the group.

Tottenham come in to this match sitting top of Group J, having defeated Qarabag at home and battled to a hard fought point in Monaco. However, there will be slight concern over the fact that Tottenham have only won one of their last five games in all competitions, even though that was a 4-1 win over Manchester City. Mauricio Pochettino will want his team to get back to winning ways and remain top of the group.

Tottenham have won only two of their last eight away Europa League games and Anderlecht are unbeaten in thirteen matches at home. Therefore, this could be a close game and Tottenham may have to settle for another point on the road.
