Real Sociedad are struggling for an attacking threat with Carlos Vela due to serve a one-match suspension on Saturday. The winger played as a striker in the absence of Jonathas and Imanol Agirretxe and in the unlikely event Jonathas can overcome his knee injury, coach Eusebio could ask another wide man, Bruma, to play a central role. There are question marks about the fitness of left winger Mikel Oyarzabal and central midfielder David Zurutuza. Defenders Raul Navas and Carlos Martinez are unlikely to be ready for the weekend while midfielder Sergio Canales is out for the season.

Cristiano Ronaldo has been ruled for Real Madrid as he undergoes stem cell treatment to speed up the recovery of his hamstring in time for the Champions League game next week. Real Sociedad have shown they are capable of springing a surprise or two as their two wins in the last ten games came when least expected. They ended Sevilla’s run of 17 consecutive wins at Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan earlier this month and followed up with a 1-0 home win against Barcelona a week later. La Real then lost at Eibar and second-bottom Getafe in San Sebastian before holding fourth-placed Villarreal to a goalless draw in El Madrigal last weekend. Zinedine Zidane adopted a cautious approach for the Champions League semi-final first leg at Manchester City in midweek but we can expect Real Madrid to revert to their typically adventurous game in a bid to stay in the title race. They have closed the gap to Barcelona and Atletico with nine consecutive league victories and are now just one point behind the joint leaders. They are unbeaten in nine games away from home in the league this year but have conceded at least one goal in each of the last 10 road trips in La Liga. Real Sociedad’s injury list makes their task more difficult and Real Madrid should, at last, be able to keep a clean sheet on the road.
