Premier League preview – Everton vs Tottenham prediction

Everton manager Roberto Martinez suffered a double-blow in the 4-3 defeat against Stoke on Monday when James McCarthy and his replacement Tom Cleverley were substituted because of injury. Both midfielders will miss the clash with Tottenham on Sunday when Darron Gibson and Leon Osman are in the running for their first start of the season. Romelu Lukaku was the good news story as the Belgian striker scored twice against the Potters to take his tally for the season to 15 goals in 19 games.

Tottenham midfielder Moussa Dembele injured an ankle in the 2-1 victory at Watford last time and is not expected to return before the FA Cup 3rd round on 10 January. Christian Eriksen could be recalled as Mauricio Pochettino shuffles the midfield and Kyle Walker is expected to return at right back. Alex Pritchard is edging closer to a comeback after missing four months with an ankle injury while there are no signs of a return date for Clinton N’Jie who has a problem with his knee.

Possible Line-ups

Everton: 4-3-3 formation: Howard; Coleman, Stones, Mori, Galloway; Barkley, Barry, Gibson; Deulofeu, Lukaku, Kone

Tottenham: 4-2-3-1 formation: Lloris; Walker, Alderweireld, Vertonghen, Rose; Dier, Alli; Eriksen, Carroll, Lamela; Kane

Prediction

Everton are struggling to hold on to a place in the top half of the league and it all points to a sloppy approach at home. The Toffees have only lost one game on the road this term in contrast to four defeats at Goodison Park. They go into the New Year on the back of  successive home defeats against Leicester and Stoke in which they have conceded a combined total of seven goals.

Tottenham have emerged as title contenders with one of the most consistent records in 2015. Their away form this season is very solid and are unbeaten since losing 1-0 at Manchester United on the opening day of the season. No team has conceded fewer away goals (8) in the Premier League this term. Tottenham are bidding for a third consecutive away win after defeating Southampton 2-0 and in-form Watford 2-1 in the last two weeks.

Everton are facing a crisis at Goodison Park and Roberto Martinez would probably settle for a similar result to when the sides drew 0-0 at White Hart Lane earlier this season. Expect a more disciplined display than in recent games but Tottenham look most likely to steal the win.
